The best destinations for first-time Digital Nomads

Working from the office certainly has lots of perks; free coffee, swivel chairs, and unlimited snacks on the pantry but I’m here to tell you that we can swap out the snacks for a coconut with an umbrella straw, the swivel chairs to a hammock, and maybe keep the coffee along with a margarita by the beach.

If you’ve finally landed your dream job with the added benefit of being able to work from anywhere in the world and are here to plan out where to set up your home office for the next few months, plus you're very overwhelmed with the choice of destinations? Well here are the top 5 countries to consider to get started.

Each country is judged by the living cost, wifi speed, all-year-round amazing weather, and how big of a digital nomad community it has, since working independently might require a buddy from time to time.

5. Singapore

Known as one of the world’s tech hubs, Singapore is a very safe and futuristic country with one of the fastest wifi in Asia, you won’t have to worry about anything, Singapore has it all: beaches (real and artificial ones), great accommodations, CoWorking spaces, a high population of expats and the list goes on and on.

There are so many attractions to see in Singapore starting with the iconic Gardens by the Bay, Sentosa Island, and Marina Bay Sands. Although this beautiful city has a relatively high living cost it is definitely worth every penny.

You can also travel to Malaysia since they have a toll road connecting each of the countries and crossing it would not take more than 30 minutes, while in Malaysia do visit Islands such as Langkawi, Redang, and Perhentian.

If you’re set on visiting Singapore and Malaysia, one of our TripLeaders has a CoWorking trip to both destinations, and don’t worry -the local experience is definitely a priority.

4. Brazil

Rio de Janeiro has made a name for itself as one of the world's most captivating cities – with hot, sunny weather all year and an awe-inspiring cityscape of high-rise buildings set against a backdrop of mountains and sea, it's just one of those places that you can't help but fall in love with the moment you arrive.

Although the idea of remote working is not something that is embedded into the people, there has been a steady increase in CoWorking spaces all over the city of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

There are a lot of neighborhoods you can opt to live in and a little tip is to not wear anything flashy or dangle around expensive cameras on certain parts of the city. The first unique neighborhood you can settle into is  Ipanema if you’re looking to surf and socialize then you got a winner, be sure to visit the rocky Pedra do Arpoador peninsula to go for sunset trails.

Jardin Botanico offers a more secluded and exclusive feel, it is also home to a beautiful botanical garden rich in flora and faunas such as macaws and other tropical plants.

Leaning more towards the party scene? Leblon might entice you to stay longer than you normally would, you can find a variety of vibrant bars, high-end restaurants, and properties here, a pristine white sand beach with the view of the Dois Irmao or Two Brothers Mountain.

3. Thailand

There’s a reason Thailand ranks high on our list, this country needs no introduction. Famous for being affordable and filled with beautiful locations such as Koh Samui, Phuket, Koh Phangan, and of course the hustle and bustle of Bangkok city -this country pretty much sells itself! if you're set on CoWorking in Thailand, check out the Remote co-working guide to Thailand.

2. Canary Islands, Spain

Did you know that the Canary Islands were formed due to volcanic eruptions? Well, this island checks out most of what a digital nomad would look for -beautiful and affordable villas, great weather all year round, and good infrastructure.

Among all of the beautiful Islands, Gran Canaria and Tenerife would be the most popular ones in the archipelago. In Gran Canaria most nomads would prefer to stay near the Las Canteras beach, the price ranges vary but be sure to book in advance if you’re planning to stay during the winter months, prices tend to rise real quick.

As for Tenerife, Santa Cruz is the capital and it is the largest city on the island. One of the most beautiful beaches would be Las Teresitas, which is known for having golden-colored sand. If you love to hike, head over to Mount Teide located in Teide National Park, if hiking isn't your thing then take a cable car to the summit.

1. Bali, Indonesia

This southeast Asian country is the very definition of digital nomadism, you got the luscious tropical forest, beautiful rice paddies and the cliffside beach to choose from, and not to mention very Instagram and Pinterest-worthy cafes to work from. Most of the locals speak the Balinese and Indonesian languages but not to worry since everyone pretty much knows how to speak English.

Bali is has a relatively large community of nomads where they organize gatherings and CoWorking trips, a few of the most popular areas include Kuta, Canggu, Ubud, Uluwatu, and Seminyak. Each location has its own distinct characteristic, for example, Seminyak is more of an upscale party area, whereas Canggu is more laid back and filled with beach clubs that won’t require you to wear certain clothes.
